The VILT installation represents a sophistication of training delivery methods, the application of advanced training technology, and access to cutting-edge e-learning course offerings hosted on the learning management system.
Partnering with the United Nations (UN) and NATO, the delivery of the VILT facility is a key component of NATO's broader Defence and Related Security Capacity Building (DCB) Project for UN peacekeeping training. The project was endorsed by NATO Foreign Ministers in April 2020 and the NCI Academy, as an accredited NATO Education and Training Facility, was chosen by NATO to lead the programme. Under the venture, the Academy will also deliver tailored courses and 'train-the-trainer' sessions for C4ISR, Communications and Information System (CIS) Planning, Cyber Security and Spectrum Management 2024.
"The VILT installation is one of the remarkable achievements attained thus far, and it will be a pivotal facility that holds great promise for training UN peacekeeping forces, before and during their deployment," said Sherri Aker, Deputy Dean of the NCI Academy. "The NCI Agency is fully committed to finalizing the project by July 2024 and ensuring sustainable capability for the UN."
The VILT facility is a key component of this package, and it will play a vital role in ensuring that UN peacekeepers are well prepared to carry out their missions.
Theodora Adekunle, the NATO Programme Manager for UNDCB said: "The DCB package for UN peacekeeping training focuses on four key areas: military performance evaluation, medical care, counter-improvised explosive devices, and signals and information technology. This collaboration aims to enhance the UN's capacity for peacekeeping operations and support troop-contributing countries."
The DCB project reinforces NATO's commitment to enhancing UN peacekeepers' operational performance and safety whilst contributing to international peace and security.
"This project is a concrete example of the strong cooperation between the UN and NATO. The VILT Facility will help us to better prepare UN peacekeepers for the challenges they face in the field," said Assistant Secretary General Bernardo Mariano Jr, Chief Information and Technology Officer for the UN.
The DCB package for UN peacekeeping training is a significant step forward to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations.
