Agency experts exchange innovative ideas at NATO's TIDE Sprint

From 18-22 March 2024, nine subject matter experts from the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency) participated in NATO's leading think-tank event, TIDE Sprint 2024.

Aimed at fostering advancements, innovations and cooperation between NATO and Partner Nations, TIDE Sprint is a recurring interoperability consortium organized by NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT). The event brings together experts from across NATO, military, industry, and academia who are committed to advancing the interoperability of NATO and national command and control capabilities and information technology services.

This year, nine experts from the NCI Agency participated in the data-centric security, data science and artificial intelligence, enterprise architecture, service management and control, and TIDE Sprint School tracks of the event. They presented an overview of the Agency's work across these topics, discussed the direction we will be heading towards and collaborated with NATO and industry participants to develop solutions to challenges they are currently facing.

For example, Agency briefers in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence portion of the event discussed the current state and future direction of the Agency's data science and artificial intelligence (AI) efforts and explored the Agency's work in using data science and emerging and disruptive technologies for multi-domain operations. Emerging and disruptive technologies like AI are increasingly prevalent, have a profound impact on our daily lives and influence on the way NATO operates.

As NATO's cyber and technological hub, the NCI Agency is always exploring new ways of utilizing these tools to better support NATO's mission and operational needs. During multi-domain operations, there is a larger flow of information shared between the headquarters of all operating domains and environments. As AI-based solutions have the capacity to swiftly and accurately retrieve information from various sources and systems at once, NCI Agency experts are examining use-cases of AI to positively influence the situational awareness of operational headquarters and NATO Commanders.

"TIDE Sprint is a vital link between NATO, industry and academia experts, facilitating collaboration crucial for overcoming modern challenges and driving NATO's digital transformation," said Daniel Sousa, Data Scientist at the NCI Agency.

The discussions and ideas shared at TIDE Sprint 2024 will help NCI Agency experts develop new innovations to further NATO's interoperability and collaborative efforts.
